Introduction
Chainalysis is a prominent blockchain data platform specializing in cryptocurrency compliance and investigation services. Founded in 2014, the company provides data, analysis, and tools to governments, exchanges, financial institutions, and other businesses to detect, prevent, and investigate illicit activity related to Bitcoin, Ethereum, and over 80 other cryptocurrencies. Essentially, Chainalysis aims to bring transparency to the often-perceived anonymity of blockchain transactions. How Chainalysis Works
Chainalysis doesn’t directly track individuals. Instead, it focuses on clustering addresses together to identify entities – such as exchanges, darknet markets, or individual users – based on transaction patterns and known information. This process, called blockchain analysis, relies on several core techniques:
- Entity Clustering: This involves grouping together multiple cryptocurrency addresses that are controlled by the same user or organization. Chainalysis identifies these relationships by analyzing transaction flows and patterns.
- Transaction Graphing: Chainalysis maps the flow of funds across the blockchain, visualizing the movement of cryptocurrency from one address to another. This allows investigators to trace the origin and destination of funds.
