An Intrusion Detection System (IDS) is a security system that monitors a network or systems for malicious activity or policy violations. Any malicious activity or policy violation triggers an alert, allowing security personnel to respond. Think of it as a burglar alarm for your digital infrastructure. Unlike a Firewall which *prevents* unauthorized access, an IDS *detects* intrusions that have already bypassed other security measures.
